Court Clerk

Administrative Assistant
Tamekia Downer

The Administrative Division of the Elberton Police Department provide the following services to the citizens of the city: report processing/records maintenance, statistical data, warrant processing, computer system operations, office management, training, municipal court, and recruiting.

All reports submitted by officers are turned in for processing. Records that are available to the public are copied and placed in a media box. They are separated into type of report (i.e. juvenile, city court, state court, accidents and incident) and kept readily available until the end of the month. At the end of the month, reports are collected and Uniform Crime Reports, city manager reports and statistics are compiled and forwarded to the proper location. Reports are then filed in the records room. Reports are available for copy for $3.00 per report.

All state and local warrants are placed with the original casework and then entered on the NCIC/GCIC computer. The person’s name, identifiers and charges are listed. If the person is stopped by law enforcement and their information is run through NCIC/GCIC, it will indicate the person is to be arrested. Persons arrested will be returned to Elberton for prosecution.

Officers are trained to enter warrants on the NCIC/GCIC computer and to remove them once the person has been taken into custody.

The department is in the process of computerizing all records. Many records are still in paper form, while some have been placed on data bases and spread sheets. The department is currently looking at records management systems.

City Court is generally held on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 5:30pm.

If you have been issued a citation by the City of Elberton Police Department on non-mandatory charges you have the choice of appearing in court on the court date written on the front of your citation, or pleading guilty and paying the fine prior to court. Only a plea of guilty can be accepted outside of court. If you plan to plea otherwise you must come to court. Anyone under the age of 21 when the citation was issued may not pay the citation in advance and must appear in court. Persons 16 years of age and younger must appear in juvenile court. Anyone failing to pay in advance and failing to show up in court will have a bench warrant issued for failure to appear. This will add $100.00 to the fine amount and may result in arrest. All bench warrants will be placed on the NCIC/GCIC computer showing the person has an active warrant for their arrest.

If you have been charged with no proof of insurance, you must provide proof that insurance was in effect on the date and time you were stopped. If you can not provide that proof, you will be charged with no insurance resulting in a higher fine and possible suspension of your drivers license.

You may pay your fine either in person or by mail. If you choose to pay your fine in person, bring a copy of all your citations to the Elberton Police Department. If you choose to pay by mail, fill out and sign the back of the citation you received from the officer. Mail this signed form with a money order or cashiers check. If you wish to receive a receipt for your payment, you must include a stamped, self-addressed envelope. Make money orders/cashiers checks payable to the City of Elberton Police Department and mail them to City of Elberton Police Department, 209 Elbert Street, Elberton, GA 30635. Make sure your payment reaches the City of Elberton Police Department prior to your court date. If you have any questions, please contact the Court Clerk at (706) 213-3100.
