Lake Richard B. Russell

The beautiful and serene Lake Russell, named in memory of the late senator from Georgia, serves as the center for recreational and tourist activity in Elbert County.  Visitors come from all over the United States and the world to experience the best in fishing, to use the Olympic Rowing Center (training center for the 1996 Olympic rowing teams), to try one of Georgia's most challenging and beautiful golf courses (see below), to camp, to stay in the modern cabins, to swim, or just to relax.

Attractions on and around the lake include Richard B. Russell State Park, Russell Dam, Bobby Brown State Park (on Clarks Hill Lake), Petersburg, Beaverdam Marina, Elbert Park, Middleton, Heardmont, Dan Tucker's Grave (see below), Heardmont Cemetery, and more.

Arrowhead Pointe Golf Course

Located on a 26,500-acre lake, Richard B. Russell State Park offers some of the state's finest fishing and boating. And with the opening of Arrowhead Pointe golf course, the park now boasts one of the top championship courses in the region. The 6,800-yard course is situated on a peninsula within the state park and the water views are stunning, with 10 of the 18 holes skirting Lake Richard B. Russell. Bob Walker’s design has been compared to the more expensive courses at Lake Oconee because of the challenging layout and the scenic vistas. One exception to that comparison is that there are no visible lakefront houses from any vantage point on the course, consistent with the state park golf course theme of “no crowds, no houses, no noise.”

Georgia Guidestones
The Georgia Guidestones, Elberton's most unusual granite monument, poses a mystery for the numerous visitors who visit the site seven miles north of Elberton on Georgia Highway 77 each year, and also a philosophical message providing guides for the preservation of mankind. Known as the Stonehenge of America, the Guidestones are mysterious in origin, for no one knows the identity of a group of sponsors who provided the specifications for the 19-foot high monument.

Heardmont and Old Dan Tucker's Grave

Heardmont, located in eastern Elbert County on Lake Russell, is home to several historical sites.  The community was named for former Georgia governor Stephen Heard, whose home was on the property.  Heard is buried in Heardmont Cemetery with two of his slaves, Mammy Kate and Daddy Jack, who saved him from the British.  Heardmont is also home to Old Dan Tucker's Grave -

"Old Dan Tucker Was A Mighty Man; Washed His Face In A Fryin' Pan; Combed His Hair With A Wagon Wheel; Had A Toothache In His Heel"

The song is known by everyone.  Many do not know, however, that Tucker actually existed.  The Rev. Daniel Tucker, a Revolutionary War captain, ferry operator, and Methodist minister, lived in Elbert County until his death in 1818.  His grave (near Lake Russell in Heardmont) is a popular tourist destination.

Nancy Hart's Cabin
Nancy Hart Log Cabin was the home of Nancy Hart. She was a staunch patriot, a deadly shot, a skilled doctor, and a good neighbor. A spy for the Colonists, she is credited with capturing several British Tories. The cabin, spring, and park are located on River Road, just off Highway 17 south of Elberton.

Granite Bowl

2002's Elbert County vs. Hart County game.  Elbert County defeated their archrivals
35-9.

Elberton's unique Granite Bowl is Georgia's largest high school stadium with a seating capacity of 20,000.  The stadium has been honored in several national magazines, one recently calling it the best place to have a high school football game in the country.  Built entirely with contributions and community effort, the Granite Bowl is a source of civic pride in Elbert County.  The scoreboard was donated to Elbert County by the University of Georgia after having served in Sanford Stadium.  The Granite Bowl celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2003.
