Elberton Historic Preservation Program

Elberton’s local preservation program is administered by the Elberton Historic
Preservation Commission (HPC), established in 1985.  The main focus of this commission
is to preserve the history of our community. The Commission considers requests and
issues a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA) prior to work being started.

When do you need to consult the HPC to obtain a COA?

·   If you plan to make any alterations to the exterior of your property. Alterations
may include, but are not limited to, installing siding, shutters, fencing, roofing,
painting, outbuildings, replacing windows, etc.

·    Signage or awnings for your business

·    To obtain information on your plans for modifying your property.

·     NOTE: general maintenance/repair of existing property is encouraged and a COA
is not needed.

Is my property located within the Historic District?

·         The Historic Districts are marked with street signage.

·         The Historic Districts are broken down into 3 areas.

o        District 1 Residential (See Maps below)

o        District 2 Residential (See Maps below)

o        District 3 Commercial (See Maps below)
